    Roger Federer met Andy Murray in the final of this event. Murray led 6 to 4 in head to head meetings and it was the second time these players have met in the final of a Grand Slam tournament (previously Federer defeated Murray 6–2, 7–5, 6–2 at the 2008 US Open). Federer won in the final 6–3, 6–4, 7–6(11), against Murray, to claim his first Australian Open title in three years, his fourth overall and his first since the surface was changed in 2008.
    Rafael Nadal was the defending champion, but retired due to a right knee injury trailing 3–6, 6–7(2–7), 0–3 in the quarterfinals against Andy Murray.
